Building Reading Skills

Most of us know that children can benefit from practice reading.  Those of us with children often spend some time each day encouraging our children to read or reading with them.  All too often, we are left in the dark with regards to specific strategies to employ when reading with our children.  On this page you will find some "look fors" or benchmarks for encouraging strong reading habits.  As you go through this page, remember that encouraging children to read expository text is an especially powerful tool in building reading skills.
